Ramble #0 - Let the rambling begin
Something a bit off-putting happened to me just the minute after I created my Substack account. They ask you right away one of the most challenging questions: “What is the name of your publication?”.
Substack, would you mind giving me a minute?
First, I am not sure if I had any plan to publicize something here. Second, I need to ask all my imaginary friends and demons what they think about it.
Just imagine a movie scene from the movie Inside Out. You can easily picture this as a discussion between Joy and Sadness, arguing about things we can talk about while Bing Bong keeps throwing random ideas in the background.
There could not be a better word than Ramble to describe this writing experiment.
It resonates with me on so many levels. Let’s take a look at the definitions I found in the Merriam Webster dictionary.
a: to move aimlessly from place to place
In the last years, I moved a lot between Europe and the US, getting used to packing my life in a suitcase. I have been rambling even more recently. With the Shelter In Place (SIP) in San Francisco, I took every little walk outside as an adventure to explore my hood and my town. Being a tourist in your city could be fun. In general, this is how I like to discover things, roaming around, taking lefts and rights with no specific goal.
b: to explore idly
Similarly, exploring is an essential part of my professional life as a Developer Advocate. I have the luxury to explore things that no other folks in the team may have the time for. Exploration could take many shapes and forms. It could be discovering a new framework, a programming language, or even a new tool. I am free to explore, learn things on the way, and share them back with the community.
c: to talk or write in an aimless, erratic, and often long-winded fashion
We will have space here. I don’t pay to print anything on paper, and Substack is nice enough to not charge me for the number of characters printed on your screen. There are a few sinuous journeys I want to embark you on.
In the last few months, I have been thinking a lot about the role and the purpose of Developer Relations. But also on how individuals can contribute to this function and the day to day life of DevRel professional. I hope to share here some ramblings on those topics, inspired by concrete examples.
DevRel Rambles is both addresses to existing professional, aspiring ones and anybody curious to learn more about Developer Relations in general.
Hop onboard!
In the meantime, tell your friends or ask questions!
PS: I first thought it was written rumble then realized it suggested a totally different approach. But we can always explore later 😆
